The Port Bay pier (small) is at the end of West Port Bay Road and the Sodus Bay pier (long) are places to cast out heavy spoons. So how do you know if trophy trout and salmon will be catchable upon your travels to the Oak Orchard and WNY area? Brown trout reports still about 50% good/50% slow. Remember as these kings start to stage that their preferred water temps are also changing. There should be a mix of spawning and staged fish in the holes with fresh fish trickling in anytime. A few guys report crowding, but as compared to say last year Id have to say there are a few less guys out and about. Thru yesterday guys were into good steelhead action on some fresh fish on the highest flows while water color was not too bad. All the trib flows are up just a bit from the latest rain thru yesterday. Stay at the shop lodge (Licorice Lodge) close to the Oak Orchard River fishing action! Browns are more likely in downstream water with a few steelhead at the dam. But with cooler temps this week, the water temp has finally started dropping. Last week, on good flows, there was good action, then tougher again thru the past weekend on higher flows and now this week before another potential rise in flows there are a few more guys out there getting scattered hook ups. If the forecast is realized with any significant rain, then flows all around could be back on the rise and going off color. Expect mod to med, but just less then med mostly clear flows in the Oak. End of week there is the chance for mixed bag precipitation and Lake Effect Snow for the weekend. If theres significant rain ahead of or instead of the ice/snow, then trib flows could be on the rise and going off color. Anglers fishing from boats should be able to maintain at least six feet of distance between one another. If theres steelhead in the Oak then more then likely theres a few slinking up those smaller waterways too. Real light fishing pressure today, only one car observed in the parking spots on the Oak. Theres still good numbers of fish higher in the Oak watercourse nearer the dam. So, flows, weather and fishing action are somewhat up and down. See more info on theirFacebook page. Fish have been taking mostly spoons with a few meat and flasher/fly mixed in. Even though I wouldnt look for turbine flows to change much in the near term, once the water temps begin to rise even a little the drift chances should improve and more fresh fish will hopefully be evidenced all around. There seems to be a stalemate between the open Lake temps and the trib water temps thanks to the relatively mild winter. Any given half day outing yielding something like a few hook ups. Forecast is mostly clear thru the upcoming week, no significant impact expected from the upcoming east coast storm. The week ahead looks mostly clear with seasonal temps and then colder again toward the end of the week. Same for estuary slow water areas on the smaller tribs where guys have had on and off action. That will subsequently melt. On the Oak thru the so far not too dirty turbine flows of today, guys have been scoring some fresher steelhead mostly nearer the dam. Weather and the calendar is the biggest factor for angling pressure and bringing more fishermen out or keeping them indoors. Look for your fishing window sooner then later whenever reasonable conditions come together. Opportunities right now may not be for multiple hookup days but the chances are there for a few hard worked at bites with light fishing pressure in real nice flows and not bad weather conditions. Saturday was a brief morning trip. Fishing pressure is moderate right now and generally guys are moving around offering chances to fish different spots between the swingers and the drifters be it fly, float or spin. And lest we forget brown trout where world-class waters such as Niagara River, Oswego River, Oak Orchard Creek, Eighteenmile Creek, Sandy Creek and Maxwell Creek provide peak fishing opportunities in November and December. New migrations of fresh fish could come anytime during this part of the season with good flows or especially with any bump up in trib flows.
